The Immortals

      The Immortals

He led a life like Dorian Gray.

His tomorrows were his today.

There was no portrait of him.

His long life was about to begin.

He had lived through centuries.

His date of birth none would believe.

He had lived to see it all.

The Roman beginning & the fall.

The middle ages, he lived through.

The time of enlightenment, he saw too.

He helped start the industrial age.

But, he never took center stage.

He always stayed out of the lime light.

Too much attention made him uptight.

There were too many questions to answer.

It is true,—– he was a great dancer.

He was good at a plethora of things.

Most of these, he didn’t want seen.

It would draw attention to him.

So, often, he made sure he didn’t win.

He was an immortal, that much he knew.

He never knew another till he met you.

He had his suspicions, that much was true.

When he knew for sure, he wasn’t cruel.

It was 200 years later, yet he knew her.

It was his only past love. He knew for sure.

He could never forget her look, her smell.

She knew immediately it was him as well.

Quick explanations cleared the air.

Before it was more than either could bare.

She knew of no other immortal  either.

Neither could guess how long they would be here.

Their 2nd meeting happened in the 17th century.

They have never separated since this entry.

She had been around almost as long as him.

Yet, they both remained 25 since who knows when.

They are still together today, you know.

They move & start over every 25 years or so.

This is all so, to others,  it won’t show.

They are immortal, as far as they know.

They have had kids along the way.

Guess what? They are still here today.

Immortality is catching on, it seems.

Yet, the kids also, keep a low scene.

None of them know if they are alone.

None knew why immortality is their own.

The kids decided to make it their work.

They became researchers into the quirk.

They haven’t found any answers yet.

But, there is a lot more info they can get.

Sometimes, it feels like they are close.

But, nothing yet, of which they can boast.

Yet, they live on year after year.

They never regret, nor have any fear.

They would like all to be like them.

That is one he would be happy to win.
