The Soldier

The Soldier

A  snow storm was raging outside the cabin.

She heard something like scraping at the door.

She did not want to let something bad in.

Yet, she knew, she could do no more.

She opened the door and a man fell in.

It was a soldier, covered with snow & ice.

He said “I could have been enemy then.”

She said “No, cause you knocked nice.”

Puzzled, He got up & brushed off the snow.

He was a soldier, trained from the womb.

War and killing was his only goal.

“I am here to protect you from the enemy doom.”

“Are you living here alone?,” he shivered.

“Yes,” she said. “My husband died long ago.”

“This war could last the rest of winter.”

“I may be here that long before I go.”

“You are welcome to stay. Do you need food?”

“I haven’t eaten in a day or so.”

She busied herself preparing some food.

He barred the door. No one would go.

“Why do you live way out here all alone?”

“My husband was a trapper. I stayed on.”

“He was killed in an avalanche.”

“I stayed  here after he was gone.”

“How do you live in this circumstance?”

“I trap too. Sell the furs in the fall.”

“It gets lonely at times, but I love it here.”

Then they heard a noise outside. A call.

They both knew the enemy was near.

A bang on the door & the soldier fired .

They heard a thump on the door outside.

A moan was heard like someone was tired.

The woman went to look outside.

The soldier said “NO.” He indicated silence.

No other sound was heard outside.

The woman opened the door in defiance.

An enemy soldier laid there wounded.

The woman grabbed him & drug him in.

The soldier went to shoot him

The woman stopped him. “This is sin.”

“I am a soldier. it is my duty.”

“He is wounded. I will help him.”

“You cannot aide the enemy.” he said.

“I will help anyone hurt in my home.”

The soldier went to sit on the bed.

She dressed his wounds then he moaned.

“Why are you helping me?” he said.

“We are all equal under God” she stated.

“Love your enemy as yourself.”

Both soldiers were shocked at such statements.

She lifted the wounded soldier into bed herself.

The soldier kept fading in & out of consciousness.

the other soldier said “I think he’s dying.”

She said “He stopped bleeding. He was found with this.”

She held up a cross on a chain. She was crying.

“I don’t understand. What’s that mean?”

She explained the cross and what it meant.

“ I have never heard this. It could cause a scene.”

“If soldiers followed such rules, they would recant.”

“Their pledge to be a soldier would be useless.”

“Listen to the Holy Spirit as it speaks to you”

The soldier squirmed. His cause felt fruitless.

In a few days the wounded soldier died.

Before dying, he asked for forgiveness from God.

The soldier was shocked. “What?”, he cried.

She said “He made peace with his God”

They buried him with rocks and snow.

The woman said a prayer over him.

The soldier was confused. He wanted to know.

She explained the principle of sin.

For a few months she gave him Bible lessons.

He rebelled at first, then something happened.

As the Holy Spirit convicted his heart during sessions,

he began to see the truth. And he confessed bad sins.

He knelt and asked for forgiveness.

He was converted. Jesus was his Lord now.

“What will you do now?” she asked with firmness.

“I will resign my position & follow the Lord somehow.”

As he left in the spring, he said “I will see you again soon.”

In the fall he returned to her.

He took her in his arms & her heart swooned.

He was a new soldier now. That was sure.

A soldier in God’s army saving souls

He would fight side by side with her.

God and her, wherever he goes.

Coming Together In A Heated Rush

Coming Together In A Heated Rush

The wind howls across the ice flows

It sends the frozen snow skimming.

A hardened river on a river. So it goes.

It is not the same as in the beginning.

Is it flowing North, South, or Westward?

It just glides to the shoreline till it’s free.

Ice above & the water below. It’s end is heard.

As the glacier breaks & falls into the sea .

You come to me on fast forward.

You try to put the bums rush on me.

I am not one to rush toward.

I’m like the glacier headed to the sea.

Like a moth drawn to a flame.

You have no control over your impulses.

We both push and pull to make a claim.

Within this moment that encroaches.

History is relived through your own intent.

You’re drawn to me for that very reason.

We each try to mold the moment.

I know it’s coming in due season.

This is where the whole world keeps on turning.

This is where we come undone—–undone.

It has been brought to this point by yearning.

Which you cannot mix with fun.

Will they measure me by branches.

Count the rings and sift my ashes.

Mark the ground where I fell & carry on.

Or, will we fight against the silence.

Fill our days with noise & violence.

Not recognizing our hearts when we are done.

The moment of heated rush passes by.

We are left to piece it all together.

I find that you’re still you & I am I.

You’re touch is gentle. Like a feather.

No words pass between us.

We’re both lost in our own world.

There is no longer an interest in lust.

I lie on my side with my legs curled.

We soon get up & go about our business.

It’s as if we were someone else.

Video games & sports become your business.

I sit a & wonder how it felt.

I think of the glacier slowly sliding to the sea.

It’s history is there left behind.

An open book for all to see.

Slowly, I finally start to unwind.

I am not frigid nor turned off by love.

I just don’t deal with it in high gear.

It makes me feel like a glove.

Out of place when you are near.

For awhile we came undone—–undone.

Nothing mattered but this moment in time.

But, such emotions shouldn’t be for fun.

Only if I’m yours & you are mine.

Will they measure me by branches.

Count the rings and sift my ashes.

Mark the ground where I fell & carry on.

Or, will we fight against the silence.

Fill our days with noise & violence.

Not recognizing our hearts when we are done.

Even With This, Peace Can Be Found

Even With This, Peace Can Be Found

Another day of the same old crap!!

This certainly isn’t where it’s at.

Everything changes, but death & taxes.

Just more crap, but that’s what the fact is.

I think it is time for a real big change.

Chlorine in the human gene pool for names.

Fifty years of “0” reproduction.

Stick to this without interruption.

Then start over and do it right.

Stamp out stupidity with all your might.

Political mentality has got to go.

The same with perverts who steal the show.

Choose your child from a long black tube.

Make it smarter than a Rubik’s Cube.

I’m not talking about a paradise.

But, something that is, at least, nice.

But, ignore all this. I’m blowing off steam.

Don’t forget. Things are as bad as they seem.

This world sucks big time, you know.

Without radical changes, it has to go.

You’re damned if you do & damned if you don’t.

Many of them will. Most of them won’t.

God will play a part very soon.

He will end this world of buffoons

He has this knack of making things right.

He will have His hands full in the final fight.

Most of the world only knows how to fight dirty.

It will be their end. When God cleans, it’s worthy.

I can’t take much more of this world.

It is demoralizing, depressing, & —–worldly.

If God doesn’t intervene soon.

My perspective may get out of tune.

I am already feeling disgruntled.

I must give it to the Lord as once told.

It is my only peace in this cesspool of sin.

Escape from it all with the love from Him.—R. W. Johnson—–(2014)

More Than It Seemed

      More Than It Seemed

My life was making the rounds

of the honky tonks And bars.

There was no where I was bound.

Each place left many scars.

Some for all to see.

Others on the heart.

There was nothing there for me.

My life was literally falling apart.

Then I met a living walking dream.

My life took a different turn.

Not in the honky tonks, it seems.

But, in a in a library with book worms.

We whispered back & forth.

Then, I asked her out for coffee.

She said yes, was her retort.

It was odd. I felt so sloppy.

We had coffee & talked.

Her life was as lonely as mine.

I was so glad she hadn’t balked.

When I told her I had a good time.

I asked to see her again.

To my surprise she agreed.

Something good was about to begin.

Was I ever lucky to plant this seed.

With her looks, I didn’t see

how she could ever be lonely.

But, it seems she was just like me.

Except that she wasn’t homely.

Time passes like it always does.

We kept dating once a week or more.

No honky tonks or bars because

I wanted her to see so much more.

She was a teacher in grade school.

I was a carpenter full time.

She was interested in what I do.

I was only thinking I wish she was mine.

We had many interests in common.

There was so much to share with her.

she introduced me to her mama & kin.

Where my family was, I wasn’t sure.

One day, listening to the radio.

We heard a religious show.

We both said maybe we should go.

There was so much we didn’t know.

To make a long story shorter now.

We ended up being baptized there.

Then we exchanged wedding vows.

We became members. Now God we share.

Our life has become a threesome.

We may become four before too long.

For now it’s her & I & God is the third one.

Life has become a happy song.

Funny how life changed from honky tonks & bars.

To paradise every day of my life.

No longer does loneliness scar.

Because I have God and my wife.————-R. W. Johnson—–(2014)

Right Next Door

      Right Next Door

It happened today. What a big surprise.

I met the person who opened my eyes.

I must have traveled a million miles.

On Trains, planes, and cars. Even walked awhile.

I was searching. But, I didn’t know for what.

Seems I was kind of in a rut.

Just kept truckin & roaming around.

Till I finally came back to this town.

Yes, this town where I was born & raised.

I haven’t seen it in many days.

Why I came back? I haven’t a clue.

It wasn’t a girl because I didn’t know you.

It seems you were the ‘girl next door.’

Somehow, I never talked with you before.

Then I saw you out front in the street.

That is how we happened to meet.

You said” Didn’t you used to live next door?”

I said “Yes, my parents are still here, as before.”

“I have been just traveling around.”

“What I was searching for I never found.”

“What was that?” she said with a smile.

“I guess just a place to belong for awhile”

She laughed at that and we continued to talk.

She remembered me but, I was caught.

I had to admit I had forgotten how pretty she was.

She smiled bigger at this because

I was blushing very brightly now.

She smoothed it all over somehow.

After a week I found she was always on my mind.

She was charming, beautiful and very kind.

We started hanging out together.

We went places despite the weather.

As time went by I began to see.

She was the one who was meant for me.

She was what I had been searching for.

All this time she was right next door.

Let this be a lesson to all who read this.

Never let your life run amiss.

Take a good look at what is around.

You will be surprised at what is found.———-R. W. Johnson—–(2014)

Girl Lears Her Lesson

    Girl Learns Her Lesson

I saw him standing by his car.

He said “Oh, there you are.”

I said “Who are you?”

He said “Your dream come true.”

He had lovely blue eyes.

His smile lit up the skies.

He offered me a ride.

How was I to know he lied?

I won’t tell you what happened first.

But, when I said “No.”, it made him curse.

I’ll never ride with another strange guy.

I won’t fall for all his lies.

I don’t care if he has beautiful eyes.

I don’t care about the car he drives.

I’ll just say the answer is no.

I am sorry, but I have to go.

Another time and another place.

There was another smiling face.

Another fancy car & pickup line.

Pretty face & eyes that said you’re mine.

Offering me another ride.

Acting like he didn’t lie.

He got upset when I said no.

I told him I had to go.

He was a demanding so & so.

So I told him where to go.

I’ll never ride with another strange guy.

I won’t fall for all his lies.

I don’t care if he has beautiful eyes.

I don’t care what car he drives.

I’ll say the answer is no.

I am sorry, but I have to go.

I learned my lesson & I learned it well.

If this is their approach they can go to hell.

I’m not that kind of girl.

I’m not looking for a thrill.

I want a boy who loves me for me.

One who takes his time to get to know me.

He thinks more of feelings than he does sex.

One that won’t make my life a wreck.

A serious minded young man.

Who treats me like I really am.

That way I won’t have to say no.

I will stay and say ‘Way to go.”—————–R. W. Johnson—–(2014)

She said “No”

      She Said “No.”

I was walking along some street in town.

There was no particular place I was bound.

Just thinking how different it might have been.

If you would have said ‘yes’ way back then.

I had plans and schemes of what we’d do.

I could make them happen if I had you.

But, you said ‘no’ & our lives went different ways.

Still, I often think about those past days.

I am still here. Stuck in this town.

You’re gone. Nowhere to be found.

I am still single. But, not for lack of trying.

No one measures up to you, I keep sighing.

Somehow I got stuck in the past.

My emotions were shattered, needing a cast.

They haven’t learned to walk again yet.

If they could my life would be set.

I’m a broken man. Stumbling along with no plan.

Searching, but for what? I don’t understand?

A part of me has been ripped away.

I don’t care if it is night or day.

I’ve been this way since you said “No.”

Now, I have no idea where to go.

I walk in the park and see the birds.

I see some lovers having words.

I see kids playing ball & running with a kite.

I saw two teenagers about to have a fight.

It is all like in a dream. Am I here?

I don’t function normally. Isn’t that queer?

No thoughts seem to come clearly.

No, I haven’t been drinking beer, see.

Part of me is missing. It’s been destroyed.

I am not a man, I am just a toy.

They say time heals all wounds.

I hope and pray that healing will come soon.

In the meantime, I walk down a street in town.

I don’t have any idea where I am bound.

Insight Needed Badly

      Insight Needed Badly

Looking into the maelstrom, trying to get a view.

Trying to, somehow, better understand you.

It’s like riding a mechanical bull.

The ups and downs take its toll.

It’s true. A woman thinks different than a man.

But, this much difference, I can’t understand.

The contrast is wide and somewhat twisted.

The real cause of her death is often not listed.

Not that it would come to that.

But, radical reactions is where it is at.

I make all effort to stay under control.

Life around you is never at a lull.

I can say something is black.

You will say it is white, then attack.

What is a no no for others is o.k. for you.

This keeps everybody in a stew.

You project onto others all that is wrong.

Never seeing it was you all along.

What a twisted tale we tell.

When we lie to ourselves like hell.

How long till you see that it is true?

You can never run away from you.

I am bailing. It is too much for me.

Let someone else give it a try and see.

Until you finally come to your senses,

your life will always  be blocked by fences.

Fences you’ve created in your own mind.

A spinster life for you would be kind.——–R. W. Johnson—–(2014)

I Lost My Memory Because Of You

I Lost My Memory Because Of You.

There it is. That same old house.

I came up quiet as a mouse.

With hesitation, I knocked on the door.

Soon, a woman came to the door.

She smiled and said ”Hi.” and no more.

“Excuse me but, have I been here before?”

She looked at me with surprise & said “No.”

”Oh, one more thing before you go.”

“Do you happen to know my name?”

“You don’t even know your own name?”

“No, you see. I have lost my memory.”

“What happened? Can you tell me?”

“I woke up in the hospital 3 days ago.”

“They said I was found lying next to the road.”

“They assumed I had been hit by a car.”

“Minor cuts & bruises was all so far.’

“Also a concussion from when I fell.”

“I had no memory of it as well.”

“Where did this all happen?”

“They found me on Valencia near Main.”

Suddenly, very pale, she became.

“You said this was 3 days ago?”

“That’s what they told me before they let me go.”

“I was driving there that night.”

“Something banged my door on the right.”

“I thought the tire flipped something up.”

“Or, maybe, I had hit a big rut.”

“I saw nothing in my rear view mirror.”

“I think it was you that I hit, I fear.”

“How did you know to come here to find me?”

“I had money to stay several days in a hotel, see.”

“I had no I.D. on me when I was found.”

“There was this money lying around.”

“They said maybe I was out for a walk.”

“I might live near there, within a few blocks.”

“ I started walking all around from there.”

“Each time I was drawn to this house , I swear.”

“Now you know as much as me.”

“Come in & stay awhile with me”

“At least until your memory comes back.”

“It’s the least I can do after the fact.”

I stayed there and time went by.

She was single and pretty shy.

Gradually, my memory did return.

I lived close by, I did learn.

I had come by the money honestly.

I was not married I was glad to see.

I have to cut this story short.

But, this is my favorite retort.

“Here is my wife who I remember now.”

“She wasn’t at the start but, she is now.”

A Better Time & Place

      A Better Time & Place

Think of a world with no TV.

Would you then be closer to me?

Think of a world with no internet.

Would that bring you closer yet?

Think of a world without any phones.

Could we then spend time alone?

Think how wonderful it would be.

It would be great for you and me.

We would find lots of things to do.

All of them bringing me closer to you.

It’s only a dream that won’t come true.

Some say such talk is real cruel.

But, I remember a time when it was like that.

I may be old but, it is a fact.

In those days most married for life.

You loved no one more than your wife.

This modern world has it’s pros & cons.

But, if I had a magic wand.

I would wave it & go back in time.

Back when I would be yours & you would be mine.
